Eddie is agreeable to having his soul transferred to the judge's body, as it will give him a chance to avenge himself on his killer. But every action taken by Eddie (as the judge) results in good rather than evil and, to Nick's dismay, the reputation and influence of the judge is enhanced, rather than impaired by Eddie. A mute alien crash lands in Harlem chased by outer-space bounty hunters in this thought-provoking low budget cult classic. Brother From Another Planet is not your typical sci-fi outing. It is a surprisingly well acted film with an engaging story that defies the tiny $400k budget. Look closely for several rising stars like David Strathairn, Fisher Stevens and the lead character Joe Morton. The story is rich and solid enough to hold up to multiple viewings which helps explain why this has become a cult classic. The story connects on many levels. Parts of it feel like a retelling of the underground railroad from the civil war era in US history while parts of it feel like a precursor to big budget movies like Men in Black from the alien's perspective.

A songwriter and a artist share a flat in an artists-friendly establishment. One is in love with the girl next door but the other enjoys stringing her along. Someone is wealthy but he doesn't like people to know. And the girl next door has a father with a fiery temper. The songs are rather catchy and pleasant, and singers such as Kenny Baker and Janet Martin move them along. Attempts at comedy come off well as does the (slight) drama as the story unfolds. 'Calendar Girl' is a cheaply-made B picture from Poverty Row but, for all that, it isn't bad, and will keep you entertained.

Alan Arkin and Rutger Hauer star in this award winning movie about the successful mass escape of 300 prisoners from the Sobibor Nazi death camp. Gut-wrenching and riveting through the entire length of this dramatization of how Jewish civilians and Jewish-Russian soldiers managed to escape the Sobibor death camp. This is an emotionally charged and well done movie. It is both painful to watch as a reminder of the history of the German-agenda during Hitler's reign as well as inspiring for eventual freedom achieved. Not only were Alan Arkin and Rutger Hauer excellent in their roles but so was the entire cast. Fine acting and production values make this film a worthwhile viewing experience.

An amusing comedy which commences with a splendid joke on the audience and then gathers pace as it moves with admirable celerity to an ingeniously staged, all-out slapstick action climax.

The screenplay provides plenty of comic opportunities for Joe E. Brown, who even gets a chance to demonstrate both his famous yell and the acrobatic skill he developed in his vaudeville tumbling act. In many scenes Brown is particularly well supported by Paul Kelly, of all people, who here displays an outstanding comic ability as a straight man I'd not even suspected. Helen Mack, as usual, makes a delightful heroine and we enjoyed John Qualen, Halliwell Hobbes and the rest of the welcome faces in the support cast.

Edward Sedgwick handles the whole affair with both acumen and pace, assisted by excellent photography and snappy film editing. Although produced independently, production values are mighty impressive with Brown cavorting to great effect with props galore amidst hordes of extras in eye-catching sets.

It's surprising to find that this very pleasant entry in the college musical cycle is not better known. Not only does it feature a reasonably amusing screenplay by George Waggner which provides splendid comic opportunities for Sterling Holloway, Arthur Lake, Lon Chaney, Jr. and a host of beautiful girls, but it introduces some excellent musical numbers.

Lon Chaney Jr. plays a college athlete, just three years after his film debut. He is in top shape and he sings! Lounging on top of a piano, accompanied by the Three Lieutenants and Arthur Lake (presumably) playing the keys, he does a passable job on Thou Art My Baby. Sterling Holloway and Lake (before he became Dagwood) are funny, the girls are beautiful, what's not to like?

This is the movie that started it all. In 1903, an employee of Thomas Edison's motion picture company produced what is likely the first movie with a story line. Named The Great Train Robbery, it told a simple story of a group of western criminals that steal money from a train and later are killed by a group of police in a gun fight. The movie was so extremely popular that it launched the motion picture industry.

The first Eagle-Lion film stars Kenny Delmar as Senator Beauregard Claghorn, his Allen's Alley resident-character heard on Fred Allen's radio program. Claghorn was a blustery, one-man-Chamber-of-Commerce for all things Southern, who had no tolerance for anything north of the Mason-Dixon line, although he made allowances for South Philly. The character inspired the creation of one of the most popular of the Warner Brothers cartoon characters, Foghorn Leghorn, who re-worked most of the originals material and style. The title of this movie is a stock line - it's a joke, son - he would feed a befuddled Fred Allen each week. In the film, Claghorn gets into some financial difficulties and is forced by a machine-political gang to enter a race for state senator against his wife (Una Merkel) who appears to have a good chance to beat the political hack backed by the machine. Claghorn is in to siphon votes and ensure his wife's opponent will win and is expected to run a campaign that will defeat himself and his wife. But, he runs to win and the machine's henchies abduct him.

The film stomps a hilarity trail formerly taken by such films as Mr. Lemon of Orange and The Whole Town's Talking. Stuart Erwin stars as Johnny Dill, door-to-door salesman who transpires to be the precise doppelganger of a villainous Prohibition delinquent. When the wicked chap puts to death an opponent, unfortunate Dill is certainly in a pickle. Our male protagonist finds himself stuck between the forces of good, epitomized by lawyer Allen (Frank Albertson), and the underlings of iniquity, played by such veteran movie heavies as Mike Mazurki, Anthony Warde and Ben Welden.

This RKO film, directed by John Cromwell, tells the story of a club-footed, sensitive artist Philip Carey (Leslie Howard), an Englishman who has been studying painting in Paris for four years, but is advised by his art teacher that his work is mediocre and second-rate, and that he lacks promise. So he returns to London, England to take up studies to become a medical doctor, but his older age and introspection make it difficult for him to keep up in his scholastic work. In England, he becomes infatuated - and then obsessed by a blonde, lower-class, slatternly and vulgar, Cockney-accented, illiterate tearoom waitress named Mildred Rogers (Bette Davis).

This film was the first film to bring real critical success to its star Bette Davis. Her over-the-top theatrical performance was passed over for a Best Actress Oscar nomination, although she was an unofficial write-in candidate.

Hint for Downloading Large Files

These files can be very large and take a long time to download even if you have a fast connection because the server load can be very high. For this reason we strongly suggest using a file download manager like the DownThemAll Firefox add-on.

The DownThemAll add-on has the ability to queue many files for transfer at a later time when bandwidth is more likely to be available and it can optionally request different parts of each file simultaneously to shorten the total transfer time.

This list is a small representation out of a very large selection of video content available on the archive.org web site. Please let us know if we missed one of your favorites.
